Laser Cooling and Trapping of Atoms
This course will examine the theory and experimental techniques involved in laser cooling and trapping of ions, neutral atoms and molecules. The Nobel Prizes in Physics were awarded in 1997 and 2000 for work in this field. The following topics will be covered:
- Survey of traditional low temperature physics
- Motivation for producing cold atoms
- Trapping of ions and their cooling using lasers
- Laser slowing of neutral atomic beams
- Trapping of cold atoms in magnetic and laser fields
- Production of a Bose Einstein Condensate in atomic vapors
- Magnetic and optical trapping of cold molecules
- Applications of cold trapped atoms
